The episodic surprise hit developed by Dontnod Entertainment, Life is Strange will be returning this summer. While the original story left us with a cliffhanger, Life is Strange: Before the Storm will be telling a prequel story, leaving players holding out for Season 2 to hold out a little longer.
Interestingly enough, there is no sign of protagonist Max Caulfield to be found anywhere in Before the Storm. The new story seems to focus primarily on Chloe Price and her friendship with Rachel Amber. As alluded to in the previous game, it’s likely that the absence of Max is a driving force behind the teenage angst that leads Chloe down a road of rebellion.
The ability to rewind scenes and influence different outcomes was a core mechanic of the Butterfly-Effect-esque story of Life is Strange. In Before the Storm, Chloe will use the “Backtalk” abilitiy, which will be a set of dialogue options that tip the odds in her favor. Though it leaves one wondering if this new mechanic will be enough to replace time travel to set Before the Storm apart from its other episodic game counterparts.
Life is Strange: Before the Storm will clock in at three episodes, running shorter than it’s predecessor. But for those who want more, the Deluxe Edition will come with an additional episode entitled “Fairwell” that is rumored to be the last time we will play as Max Caulfield.
Episode 1 of Life is Strange: Before the Storm is set to release on August 31st, 2017.
