Review – Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S
The Nintendo Switch 2 may not have launched with a massive amount of brand new titles, but it did bring quite a lot of previously released games over to Nintendo’s ecosystem for the first time, such as Cyberpunk, Hitman, and Split Fiction.. Then there’s Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S, which might feel a bit odd in this launch lineup, as is an enhanced version of a game that had already been released for Nintendo’s predecessor console. I’m always up for more Puyo Puyo and Tetris though, so I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off this new console, even if in a very familiar, deja-vu-like manner.

We’re off on an adventure!
For the uninitiated, Puyo Puyo Tetris is a game that essentially features two different games in a variety of either single player or versus situations. The first one is the big daddy of all puzzlers, Tetris. It’s the game everyone knows, the block-bsaed masterpiece where you try to make full lines in the board in order to clear it and lose if your blocks hit the top of your space. Puyo Puyo, the other part of the formula, is all about connecting blobs of the same color together, in order to send them onto your enemy, or to just rack up points. Both styles are fun, and the extra fun really starts to come in if you’re playing a switch mode, which flips between two boards. One of each game.

Obligatory Puyo Puyo Pic
So why should you care about the Nintendo Switch 2 version if you already have the original, I hear you ask. The answer is, it’s mostly worth it if you play the original a lot. This will give you a fresh start on the adventure mode with upgraded visuals, which isn’t really adding much in a game that’s made up almost exclusively of 2D sprites. The addition of mouse controls is more of a niche thing, as it’s just simply not very fun to play this way in my opinion. Then there’s the new game mode of Doubles Play. This lets you play with two players on each board against each other, each controlling a block at the same time. This hectic game mode can quickly get out of hand with perfect communication, but can easily fall apart without it.

Obligatory “I Lost At Tetris” Pic
From what I was able to grasp from playing games like Mario Kart World and Fortnite, the Switch 2’s online infrastructure works significantly better than the original. For this reason, I was disappointed that Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S doesn’t feature cross play with Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 for the original Switch. As much as I tried to find someone to play against and test it out, at all different hours of the day, and most, if not every day of the week, I couldn’t find a single other player. This is an area I was really hopeful to test, but unfortunately that doesn’t seem possible without already knowing someone else to have bought the game.
Overall, Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S is a lot of fun, and would be a great pickup for anyone into the old school puzzles games. That said, if you already own the original and aren’t completely sold by it, the addition of a 4 player mode and mouse controls isn’t going to change your mind.

Graphics: 7.5 Puyo Puyo Tetris 2S is a really cute game with a lot of playtime available, but it’s not going to change anyone’s opinion on puzzle games. |
Gameplay: 8.0 Bouncing between two renowned puzzle games can be a lot of fun. It keeps your brain active at all times, while challenging you to do different things. The mouse controls were a miss and not being able to even test the online was unfortunate, but overall the game is fun to play. |
|
Sound: 9.0 The voice acting is still adorable and the music is still great. Nothing here has changed from the original at all. |
Fun Factor: 8.5 If you like puzzle games, this is one that’s completely worth checking out. There’s nothing better than being able to keep your brain active playing video games. |

Final Verdict: 8.0
