Microsoft’s stage saw the reveal of a small but highly desired teaser for what seems to be a sequel to, not a reboot of, Battletoads. With just a narrator and word bubbles speaking over black space, this is the essence of a tease but it does give some game features: Body morphing genre mash-ups, 3 player couch co-op, and 4k hand-drawn 2.5d graphics. But most importantly, that Battletoads will return in 2019.

Rare also worked on the original Battletoads for the NES in 1991. Starring Rash, Zitz, and Pimple as three anthropomorphic toads, created to compete with the success The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. There is even an animated television pilot. Renown for its difficulty, the previous games objective was always to beat your nemesis, the Dark Queen and her army of space mutants.
