Indie Wednesday – 8-Bit Grinds & Scary Times

Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays

Welcome to Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays where we highlight 4 recently released or upcoming indie games that have caught our eye. In a market where so many games can get lost in the shuffle, some true gems can sneak right past us without us knowing. These are the five games this week that we want to keep our eye on, and we think you should as well!

This week is brought to you by our author Heidi Hawes and she has a mix of old school pixel art RPGs, adventure horror, and a fantastic looking co-op game where you rescue cats. Let’s check them out!

“World of Anterra is an epic non-linear, open-world role playing adventure. The game features a handcrafted open world, deep progression systems, fast paced combat, and rich lore, all wrapped in a satisfying and tactile interface. It’s the type of game only an independent studio could make!” This caught my eye because it gave me a bit of Sea of Stars vibes with that same passion and beautiful pixel art.

“Daughter of Voodoo is a first-person, single-player ghost investigation game where ancestral Voodoo rituals collide with the unseen world of the dead. As Marie Laurette, a clairvoyant priestess, you walk a fine line between the living and the dead. Use authentic Voodoo practices to commune with spirits, guide them toward the afterlife, and uncover the truth behind their restless presence. Craft Voodoo ritual objects like mojo bags, perform ceremonies, and strengthen your connection to the realm of the dead as you unravel each supernatural mystery.” As a big fan of investigative horror games like The Mortuary Assistant, Daughter of Voodoo looks like it has an original twist on the genre that I’m looking for.

Canary

“Canary is a narrative thriller with stealth, exploration, psychological horror, and tense puzzle-solving. After a sudden helicopter crash, 13-year-old Chance Rivers is stranded in a frozen wilderness rich with Omnium, a highly valuable, hallucinogenic biomineral used and controlled by the all-powerful Praxis Labs in their death-defying cybernetic technology.” You might be seeing a pattern in my tastes here. I love a good atmospheric horror game and Canary has a nice setup to deliver some good scares.

“Whisk is a two-player platformer about shared movement and communication. Dash through surreal worlds as Luna and Foam. Rescue Dreamcats by launching them into interdimensional portals. Laugh off your misses and run it back. The fastest runs demand coordination, timing, and the confidence to commit. Save ‘em all!” I mean, this just looks like a ton of adorable light hearted fun with a friend. I know, I tonal shift after my last two recommendations, but I couldn’t pass this up!

That’s it for this week. I hope you enjoyed what you saw here and if you did please show your support for these indie developers. Go on their socials and show them some love and spread their game around as well so other people can wishlist and support as well. See you next week for another Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays.
