Indie Wednesday – Shooters, Slashers, and Spookers
Welcome to Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays where we highlight four recently released or upcoming indie games that have caught our eye. In a market where so many games can get lost in the shuffle, some true gems can sneak right past us without us knowing. These are the four games this week that we want to keep our eye on, and we think you should as well!
This week is a spotlight hosted by our author, Jordan Hawes. We have a collection of spooky first person shooters, stylish cyberpunk 2.5D action, a fantastic looking ARPG platformer with a unique idea, and a spooky Jumanji inspired co-op game. Take a look at some of these recently released and upcoming gems and see what calls to you!

“As an agent of the secret special forces A.A.U., your covert mission in Serbia goes wrong fast. Framed, intercepted, and stranded in the abandoned territory of Uzovnica, you’ll need every skill to survive, especially when everything around you is not what it seems.” A.A.U. Black Site caught my eye with its stylish blend of intense first person combat and horror elements that reminded me a lot of F.E.A.R and Trepang2. It did recently release in Early Access on Steam so go give it a go at a reasonable price! We are looking forward to the full release.

“Dive into the dystopian world of Quantic River, where frenetic action meets captivating exploration. Master katana combat, unlock cybernetics, slice through environments, hack obstacles, and explore dual-layered levels for speedrunners and explorers.” Quantic River is like a 2.5D Ghostrunner and I’m here for it. The awesome art style, setting, fast combat, and platforming all look slick and I can’t wait to play this one.

“A story-driven adventure game fusing platforming with fast-paced RPG combat. Jump between two worlds as Shiren, a young treasure hunter from Arimaya Village in search of the secret behind the dark hidden world. Experience an epic hero’s journey with a slice of nostalgia and truly fun gameplay!” I’m sucker for a fun Action RPG and we don’t get too many lately that are just focused on fun gameplay and have whimsical settings. So many lately try to be too cinematic, and that is fine, but Second Stone: The Legend of the Hidden World looks so fun to play with its deep gameplay variety, platforming, puzzles, and inviting and fun art style.

“A forgotten board game. A haunted house. Play with up to 4 friends. Roll the dice, survive the horrors that are summoned, and beat the Gamemaster to win your freedom.” The term “friend slop” has been going around a lot lately for low effort games that are pushed out to basically be only fun for party nights with friends or for streamers messing around. There have been a dime a dozen of them lately. However, Invokyr looks legitimately like a fun take on the concept and that is mostly because it clearly takes inspiration from Jumanji. A horror version of Jumanji where four friends play a board game and have to actually survive whatever they roll, count me in.
And that’ll do it for this iteration of Way Too Many Indies Wednesday! Go ahead and wishlist those that caught your eye; that kind of metric really matters for developers and publishers. Also, show support for these games in your own way: follow the devs if you can and spread the word so that these dreams can come rushing forward even faster. There’s always something for someone, so don’t forget to always be searching for the next big game that really speaks to you. If you think there’s a game that should be considered for our roundup, be sure to let us know! Have fun, and keep the indie parade going!
