Indie Wednesday – Screw You, I’ll Do It Myself!
Welcome to Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays where we highlight four recently released or upcoming indie games that have caught our eye. In a market where so many games can get lost in the shuffle, some true gems can sneak right past us without us knowing. These are the four games this week that we want to keep our eye on, and we think you should as well!
This week is a spotlight hosted by Oliver Shellding, who brought a simple theme to this collection: publishing developers. While the modern world makes it both comfortable and easy to link up with a publisher to bring your game to the masses, some still choose to forge the path ahead alone. They made the game, goddammit, they’ll figure out how to market it to everyone else! While self-publishing on the Steam storefront is by no means new or unique, it’s still inspiring to see, and these four very different games all have that air of personal success that hopefully will hypercharge them to a brilliant future. Or at least something that’ll bring a lot of attention with a controversial choice that a third party couldn’t talk the devs out of.

“Flip, nudge, and destroy in this roguelike pinball deckbuilder. Select from 100+ upgrades to create game-breaking builds and smash through the cursed playfields. Complete missions to trigger explosive special attacks and tear the tables apart, one bumper at a time.” Is this potentially a case of too many hats? Having something be roguelike, deckbuilding and also still pinball is a tall order, but the growing tide of randomized games of chance and skill have skyrocketed, and KennyMakesGames has a very polished, very attractive looking game for their flagship release. Plus, I’m a huge fan of pinball, so this has some serious potential!

“Humanity is gone. Only the Digital Afterlife remains, silent for a thousand years. Until now. Discover that eternal life comes with sacrifice in a genre-defying RPG with unique rhythm combat.” All feelings of crushing existential dread that come with thinking about this too much, Nocturne looks pixel perfect gorgeous, evoking ideas of Hyper Light Drifter mixed with Everhood.

“Relive your High School days in the town of Agefield. Itโs the early 2000s, and graduation is on the horizon. REBEL with your friends, win over your dream girl and ROCK the school! A coming-of-age adventure about friendship, love, and rebellion inspired by the raunchy teen comedies of the era.” This style of movie is one of those guilty pleasures I have on weekends with my wife when there’s nothing good out, and a game that seeks to capture the idea is a joyful concept. It looks surprisingly robust while also being just a touch janky, which makes this style of game work. Plus, there’s such a soft spot for Bully in the hearts and minds of gamers: why not a modern version that might also let you copulate with an apple pie?
Elation for The WonderBox 6000

“Elation For The Wonder Box 6000 is a first-person, claymation adventure game about going into the city to try and find a game from your youth that no one else remembers.” Oh boy. Seriously, this is such a relatable situation: loving a game/movie/tv show no one else seems to have ever heard of. Take a concept, bake it irregularly in claymation, and give it a grainy texture that feels like a found footage video game, and Elation looks like a serious contender for my “what the hell is this” get of the year. Plus, I think it’ll actually run on my computer!
And thatโll do it for this iteration of Way Too Many Indies Wednesday! Go ahead and wishlist those that caught your eye; that kind of metric really matters for developers and publishers. Also, show support for these games in your own way: follow the devs if you can and spread the word so that these dreams can come rushing forward even faster. Thereโs always something for someone, so donโt forget to always be searching for the next big game that really speaks to you. If you think thereโs a game that should be considered for our roundup, be sure to let u know! Have fun, and keep the indie parade going!
If you missed last weeks picks, here is a quick link to go check them out!
