Indie Wednesday – Dark Secrets, Dark Knights, and Dark Passageways

Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays

Welcome to Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays where we highlight four recently released or upcoming indie games that have caught our eye. In a market where so many games can get lost in the shuffle, some true gems can sneak right past us without us knowing. These are the four games this week that we want to keep our eye on, and we think you should as well!

This week’s collection is brought to you by Heidi Hawes. In this collection of indies, we have a wide variety of genres, ranging from gorgeous dark fantasy worlds, navigating through the shadows as a thief, to trying to dig your way out of a deep well that may or may not be infested with subterranean creatures. Clearly, this week’s theme is centered around darkness and what might be lurking in the shadows that surround us.

“Trapped in a decaying world ruled by cosmic entities, wield the primordial gauntlet to fight distorted foes. Explore, uncover secrets, and use tainted artifacts. Survive or be consumed by Asthenia.” ASTHENIA seems like it will be just the thing to help scratch the itch for playing and Action/Adventure game in an Elder Scrolls-like setting. I’m shocked that this is being developed by only one person!

Occulto is a non-verbal, entirely hand-drawn point-and-click adventure unlike other games in the genre. Guide Eliot through an atmospheric fairy-tale world where mysteries are solved without a single word. Its purely visual storytelling offers an experience unlike traditional point-and-click games.” I love a good point-and-click adventure, and Occulto looks like it’s a bring something a bit unique to the genre.  Originally, I was taken in by it’s gorgeous hand-drawn visuals, but its complete lack of dialogue or written words encourages more observation-driven challenges. I can’t wait to try it out in a few days!

“Become a master thief in BANDIT KNIGHT! Outsmart enemies, steal treasures, and explore a vibrant 2.5D pixel world in a satisfying blend of stealth and action. Customize your tools and unlock upgrades that help you sneak through shadows, escape in style, and rise as the ultimate King of Thieves!” Games where you can take on the role of of a thief have often been met with success, such a the game Thief, Assassin’s Creed, Uncharted, and GTA, but this might be one of the first I’ve seen with this fun, retro-inspired esthetic. I can see the blending of stealth with puzzles and pixel art working together really well!

THE WELL IS NOT EMPTY

“The well has gone dry. It’s up to you to find out why. Traverse through abandoned tunnels. Discover remnants of a ritual never meant to be seen. Power dying machinery to bring light into darkness. Dig into broken earth and crawl your way out. Down here youโ€™re not exploring… you’re trespassing.” This looks like the kind of claustrophobic nightmare that keeps me away from caves and exploring deep spaces in the real world. In a game though? Alright, I’ll try braving it to see what’s going on down there.

And thatโ€™ll do it for this iteration of Way Too Many Indies Wednesday! Go ahead and wishlist those that caught your eye; that kind of metric really matters for developers and publishers. Also, show support for these games in your own way: follow the devs if you can and spread the word so that these dreams can come rushing forward even faster. Thereโ€™s always something for someone, so donโ€™t forget to always be searching for the next big game that really speaks to you. If you think thereโ€™s a game that should be considered for our roundup, be sure to let u know! Have fun, and keep the indie parade going!
