Indie Wednesday – Roguelikes and Horrors

Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays

Welcome to Way Too Many Indies Wednesdays where we highlight four recently released or upcoming indie games that have caught our eye. In a market where so many games can get lost in the shuffle, some true gems can sneak right past us without us knowing. These are the four games this week that we want to keep our eye on, and we think you should as well!

This week’s collection is brought to you by Jordan Hawes. Theme this week seems to be roguelikes and horror, which can be two polarizing genres at times. We have a story-focused roguelike that adapts to your actions with NPCs, a co-op horror top-down shooter, another roguelike that takes heavy inspiration from D&D and DMC, and a unique looking horror game inspired by Silent Hill. Come check them out and we hope you enjoy!

“Descend into a surreal sci-fantasy world in this narrative-driven action roguelite, where every run reshapes your story. Sova’s expressive combat meets deeply branching dialogue and world-shifting decisions. Compose your violence, rewrite your past, and bend a crumbling realm to your will.” There have been some fantastic action roguelites hitting the market lately, obviously a big one most should know is Hades II. But what caught my attention for Sova is how you can shape the story and characters through your actions. Enemies will remember you, you can punch NPCs mid conversation or just ignore them, and all of this will change how the rest of the game continues.

DarkSwarm is an online co-op, top-down tactical shooter. Play as a team of elite operators in procedurally generated, semi-destructible levels. Use your skills, wits, and teamwork to destroy the alien DarkSwarm in daring operations deep inside the infested colonies.” I love a frantic top-down shooter and DarkSwarm looks like it’s going to be a ton of fun. Huge hordes of enemy aliens, local and online co-op, four different classes, and will even feature stealth and hacking for tactics. It looks like an absolute hectic blast!

Ghost Vanguard is a Beat’em Up game that combines stylish action with roguelike elements. Grab your sword and step into treacherous evil dungeons, using stylish and magnificent combos to defeat the sinister forces from the darkness and reclaim a hero’s stolen soul.” With inspiration from Dungeons & Dragons: Shadow over Mystara and Devil May CryGhost Vanguard is already off to a great start. Then with it blending all that with the replayability of roguelike design and a ton of combat customization, Ghost of Vanguard is looking amazing!

“A psychological survival horror game set in an eerie, isolated 90’s Polish town consumed by an ominous presence. You’ve come looking for answers, but everyone seems possessed by something foul. Explore the festering town, interrogate locals and fight ungodly manifestations to get to the truth.” There are some strong Silent Hill vibes coming from Holstin and I’m all about that. However, what caught my eye the most is the way it blends the pixel art perspectives. It looks like an isometric top down horror game, but when you aim your weapon it goes into a third-person 3D view. It looks fantastic!

And that’ll do it for this iteration of Way Too Many Indies Wednesday! Go ahead and wishlist those that caught your eye; that kind of metric really matters for developers and publishers. Also, show support for these games in your own way: follow the devs if you can and spread the word so that these dreams can come rushing forward even faster. There’s always something for someone, so don’t forget to always be searching for the next big game that really speaks to you. If you think there’s a game that should be considered for our roundup, be sure to let u know! Have fun, and keep the indie parade going!
